Civilian casualties

I love stumbling upon new music, esp. new music that's truly good. Wye Oak's new album, Civilian, is amazing in it's grandeur and depth. Sometimes rock-a-billy [Civilian] other times punk rock [Holy, Holy] with some quiet moments [Plains] that really spotlight Jenn Wasner's husky voice. The entire album is just about a million genres in one, check it. Wye Oak is part of a phenomenal Outside Lands line-up this year. Some tickets are still around so better get them while you can.

A Lesson in Tennis

So everyone's in love with Best Coast and for damn good reason. But let's try and widen our Cali-beach music horizons and look at Tennis, shall we? I originally discovered Tennis via Zune (yes Microsoft Zune); their single Marathon hooked me in with echoey vocals and great riffs. I took the album for a whirl and was amazed at how cohesive their sound was/is! Amazon has the album for 5 bones! Check it!! This SF weekend is supposed to be dreary so why not get to know Tennis and daydream of hot Dolores park weekends and the truffle guy! Your serve!

God Made Robots.

So in the spirit of Luke Skywalker Day (C3PO, R2D2) I decided to do a special post about my besties band, God Made Robots. They've been making music for sometime now but it was this latest song that blew my mind! The bestie S. Jane Mills is on vocals and I couldn't be more proud!! Self-described as a "nerdy-rock-pop-unit somewhere between Flaming Lips and the Pixies" I would also throw in some Stone Roses and My Bloody Valentine. So Cinco de Mayo is a few days from now and it got me thinking...who says Cinco de Mayo has to include chips-n-salsa and mariachis?! How 'bout Sangria, paletas and some Esquivel!? Juan Garcia Esquivel was a Mexican born musical genius. He, some may argue, invented the jazz lounge sound of the 50's. I remember getting my first Esquivel! CD from BMG music. You remember them? You order 5 CD's free, pay for one, then get 2 more free?! The disc was titled: The Genius of Esquivel!; boy was that an accurate title. Keep it goin'...

This was a weekend to remember; sun, parties, cocktails-amazing. Everything just felt fresh and new. To keep that feelin' alive I've been listening to some Nick Drake. I'm sure you've all heard of Nick; for awhile there his music was used for commercials ad nauseum. Take him for a spin though and I think you'll agree; he captures the essence of a warm summer day. Although it seems like years away summer is almost here! Unfortunately for San Franciscans that mostly means rain and clouds. This is good reason to plan weekend getaways! Desert Hot Springs sounds pretty hot to me; loungin' poolside with a negroni and some sexy music. Try this on for size: Air's Love 2. It's not a new release but good nonetheless. You gotta pick and choose the tracks but here's a few boozy tunes to get you started.

I'm thinkin' of hot languid days...this weekend is scheduled to be hot and balmy. To help you stay cool add some smooth sounds from King. Although more of a novella, The Story gets right to the point with, The Story; moves to some higher ground with Supernatural and ends tightly with Hey. Make sure to get the EP it's super cheap and so worth it. Check it.
